Subject

Whaling--Pacific Ocean

Description

This log from a New Bedford vessel (Charles Little II, Master) was kept by Samuel Robinson (a greenhand), from June 21, 1846 to October 23, 1848. The Congress travelled to the Pacific Ocean and the northwest coast. Highlights include descriptions of gambling, fighting, the cruelty of the Captain, a “Nantucket Sleigh Ride,” drunken fights with another ship’s crew, floggings, and several deaths and accidents, including a stove boat. One of Robinson’s shipmates died of dysentery (he was 17), and it affected Robinson so much that he taped a lock of his friend’s hair into the journal.
